Graduate UK Careers Guide > Introduction > Overview

Graduates as a whole have an excellent employment record.

If you're prepared to invest the time in considering your future and exploring alternatives, there is no reason why you shouldn't be fixed up before graduating - or soon afterwards.

So:

  • Begin your planning as early as possible

  • Be flexible in your thinking

  • Be prepared to consider posts outside the narrow specialisms suggested by your degree subject, and posts where a degree may be a useful, though not necessarily essential, pre-requisite.

Any student who is unsuccessful in Finals, or who withdraws prior to Finals, is strongly advised to see a Careers Adviser before leaving as there is often much they can do.

If you still need help after you graduate, an informal agreement exists between University Careers Services nationwide (called the Mutual Aid Scheme) enabling graduates to seek assistance from their local institution even if this is not where they studied, so give them a call! If you want contact details for your local institution, click here.

However wide and thorough your careers reading, it can never be a substitute for seeing at first hand, or better still doing a particular job, before deciding whether or not to make it your career.

Therefore, whatever careers you are considering, see if there are any appropriate courses or work available. There are a number of opportunities during the Christmas and Easter holidays, which may be of interest. If you're interested, ask your Careers Service as soon as possible since most vacancies will be filled quickly.
