"Milkround interviews are an excellent idea
because
they are held on site, disruption to lectures is minimal,
there is no travelling involved and you feel
far more relaxed in familiar surroundings".

During the Autumn and
Spring terms, employers (usually representing industrial and commercial
organisations) visit many Universities to conduct preliminary interviews
with students.
Careers Services arrange
these preliminary interviews as a service which enables students
to see a wide range of employers with the minimum of disruption
to studies.
Many employers now target,
i.e. select the Universities they visit, on the basis of past recruitment
results.
They may only visit a
few Universities on this basis. So, if your University is targeted,
the companies visiting your University will be genuinely interested
in recruiting students from your University.
Students are usually
free to choose which organisations to apply to on campus, just as
they are free to apply directly to any organisations not visiting
the campus.
However, the company
representative who comes to the campus to interview is more likely
to be interested in your qualifications than the unseen representative
you approach by mail.
If the interview goes
well, it may be the first step to you getting an offer. If an offer
is not forthcoming, the result is no worse than if you had written
to the company and received a negative letter.
If you have even a potential
interest, you should take advantage of a recruiter's presence on
campus. Having an interview with a variety of companies can give
you a perspective on the opportunities open to you. It can also
make you a better interviewee.
Autumn visitors are usually
representatives of the Accountancy profession Chartered Accountants,
Public Finance Accountants, Management Accountants, and the Finance
Departments of other public bodies.
Industrial and commercial
organisations usually make visits in Spring. The majority of visitors
will be recruiting graduates of any discipline for a variety of
occupations.
In order to be interviewed,
most firms will require you to complete an application form. Interviews
are then offered to applicants who, on the basis of the information
on the application form, are of interest to the firm concerned.
After the preliminary interviews at the University, selected candidates
are invited to second and possibly final interviews at the company's
premises.
Detailed lists containing
the names of all visitors, dates of visits, vacancy requirements,
closing date for applications, etc. are usually published by University
Careers Services in mid-October for Autumn visits and late November
for Spring visits.
By no means regard campus
interviews as the only means to a job, as many recruiting firms
do not visit Universities. You should equally search for vacancies
